When air is introduced into the inlet port, thediaphragm is forced into the exhaust seat. Theouter lip of the diaphragm is deflected downward, away from the wall, allowing air to flowinto the cylinder with a minimum of restriction.The diaphragm will remain on the exhaustseat as long as the inlet pressure is equal toor greater than the cylinder pressure. When the cylinder is fully charged and air isno longer flowing from the inlet to cylinderport, the outer lip of the diaphragm willassume its normal shape and will contact theouter wall. The diaphragm will remain on theexhaust seat. When pressure at the inlet port is vented toatmosphere (thru the control valve) the air inthe cylinder, which is at a pressure level higher than atmosphere will force the diaphragmupwards to the inlet port. This will shut off theinlet port and allow air in the cylinder to flowdirectly to atmosphere.
